We are a collective with diverse research fields, and perhaps the most significant point of connection among us is our commitment to a materialist methodology. This methodology represents a critical approach that considers the heartbeat of modern social life within the context of capitalist relations of production and reproduction. It also highlights the pursuit of liberation from various forms of oppression and domination as a central objective of social struggles.
Our interests range from the critique of political economy to the examination of political theology, from feminist studies and queer theory to the exploration of the sociology of knowledge, the history and geography of the state, as well as political organizations and social movements. We have come together within the framework of materialist studies and have the intention to engage in collaborative research projects, making possible a series of collective inquiries into our contemporary historical context.
The members of our group may have initially crossed paths by chance, bringing together people with different opinions and approaches. Yet, a common necessity unites us all: addressing the prevailing individualistic atmosphere within the intellectual research space on the left. This individualism has hindered left-leaning researchers from actively participating in political and social events. Furthermore, our group believes that being confined to individual work, due to the challenge of sustaining ongoing discussions and critiques, reduces our research to mere academic proposals.
Our group draws its energy and perspective from the ongoing developments, contradictions, and political and social struggles in Iran and the Middle East. Particularly inspiring for our group has been the emergence of ‘Women, Life, Freedom.’ Consequently, the driving force and motivation behind our research, whether historical or theoretical, lie in describing the structures of domination and exploitation, their internal mechanisms, contradictions, and tracing the trajectories of current struggles in Iran and the wider region. We approach this not as an isolated case but as an integral part of the contemporary global capitalist landscape.
While many of us have connections to academic circles, we do not view academia as our sole foundation. Our aim is not to establish yet another ‘academic’ group; rather, we aspire to create an organization, a platform, in which the accumulated knowledge from academia can be reinvigorated. This time, it is harnessed to foster non-hierarchical and self-disciplined connections.
Although we do not classify ourselves as a conventional political organization, we strongly emphasize the necessity of political organization and taking a stance. We see this as a defining characteristic that sets us apart from ‘neutral’ and ‘apathetic’ academic-scientific discourses. The materialist methodology has its roots deeply intertwined with socio-political praxis from its inception. It regards criticism and theory as instruments for social change. From this perspective, the unity of theory and praxis, or the rejection of the hierarchy between thought and action, serves as the foundational principle of materialist research.
Our community seeks to establish expansive connections without artificial boundaries, always upholding the principle of openness to ‘criticism and dialogue.’ By forming new connections, we aim to guard against assimilation while fostering ongoing critique and dialogue.
